Peter O’Toole: Young Actors Suck

“Today’s actors have their eyes up their asses. I hate amateurs. I love my business. I love acting. Right after I left drama school, I had a job. In my day England, Scotland, Wales had 80 drama schools. There are none left. So there’s no training, no discipline. The industry is top-heavy with rubbish. I love a good giggle, but I can’t when it comes to my life’s work. I revere professionalism. Actors have given up their clout. Now decision making is in the hands of lighting men, designers, bankers, special-effects people. We need to cut that out and just go with the most able trained actors in the business. And if you’re opening a play, tour it, f’r Crissakes, on the road until you get it all right before you bring it to Broadway. Let’s take our business back. Return to decent stuff.”
