Chatty Internet fanboys aren’t the only ones excited about the new batsuit debuting in “The Dark Knight,” opening Friday. Bruce Wayne himself, Christian Bale, appreciated the upgrade the most.
“In ‘Batman Begins,’ [the cowl] was like a vice on my head, giving me a headache for seven months,” says Bale. “With this one, I could move my head. I could breathe. I wasn’t fighting against the suit itself. I was able to act the anger instead of feeling the anger.”
Good thing, because in this sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins,” the highly successful silver screen reboot of the legendarily dark comic book hero, Batman has plenty to be angry about.
The Joker, sinisterly embodied by the late Heath Ledger, is looking to cause more chaos than ever in Gotham, pushing Batman’s buttons and code of ethics. A crime-fighting white knight, district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), has eyes for Batman’s girl (Maggie Gyllenhaal). And yes, Dent becomes the baddie with a split personality, Two-Face.
Bale was ready to suit up again after going to director Christopher Nolan’s house to read the “Dark Knight” script.
“I felt he had really nailed exploding all of the clichés of the genre,” says Bale. “I don’t think this is a great superhero movie. I think this is a great movie, period. The special effects and explosions don’t mean crap unless they’re in the context of really substantial drama.”
