Larry DavidPretty good. Pretty pretty, pretttty good. Larry David returns to DVD with the 5th season of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. Curb shows that the true star and genius behind ‘Seinfeld’ was David himself. While the others have crashed and burned, and Jerry became a parody of himself, Curb established David as the real deal. And he has a system…

With Curb, David surrounds himself with the best improve actors in the business, from Jeff Garlin to Cheryl Hines. For each episode, David writes a brief plot outline. The actors perform on the high wire without a script. It’s obvious from the spontaneous and outrageous dialogue they’re having a blast being circus performers in David’s sick and twisted mind. The theme song reinforces that sentiment.

He’s got it all: a loving wife, good friends, a successful career, and a great home — what could possibly go wrong for Larry David? First, David is unlikable. And he knows it. He’s self-deprecating, awful, but he tries. David has good intentions that always go up in flames.

While season 5 of HBO’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is the weakest to date, a weak season of Curb is better than no Curb. Even at it’s lowest, Curb is better than any other sitcom on primetime.

As with the previous DVD releases, the season 5 DVD features are as weak as ever. Barebones. A little featurette, but that’s about it. I’m looking forward to David, Hines and Garlin to revisit these seasons with commentaries. Wishful thinking, as HBO still hasn’t touched our other favorite Larry, ‘Larry Sanders’ - expect for the first season. That’s just a big bowl of wrong.
