Exclusive: The DVD Newsroom Survey with Garth Franklin of Dark Horizons
Hollywood Newsroom is now Buzz Newsroom! Visit and bookmark our new site. Buzz is bigger and better, including sports, world news, gadgets and the entertainment news that you're used to. Same staff, just more stuff! Why Fark, Drudge and Huffington when you can Buzz!?
Beginning this week, we present the DVD Newsroom Survey. We’re talking to our favorite DVD and movies sites, asking them about all things DVD. Our series continues with Garth Franklin of Dark Horizons. From Sydney, Australia, here’s Garth:
Q: If you landed on a deserted island with a portable DVD player and three DVD’s, which titles would you like to have along?
A: They’d have to be personal favourite films I could watch over and over - I’d say Aliens, Goldfinger and Casablanca
Q: What’s your favorite DVD commentary?
A: Can’t pick one, but any commentary by Ridley Scott is usually superb - especially his “Alien: 25th Anniversary” one.
Q: Where do you stand on Blu-ray and HD-DVD?
A: High definition DVDs in principal are a great idea and I’m an early adopter of a lot of technology. But until the format war is sorted out, and as long as they include the ridiculous ‘downconverting’ function for those of us with non-HDMI TVs, I’ve little interest.
Q: What movie inspired you to do what you do?
A: None really, I enjoy movies a lot (some I adore) but no particular one is a transcendental experience for me. I never set out to do what I do, I rather fell into it.
Q: What’s your favorite terribly awful movie?
A: Ooooh, tough one. Have a huge soft spot for “Serial Mom”, LOVE that film despite its trashiness.
Q: Any thoughts on Oscar 07? Best Film?
A: Way too early to tell yet but I think Dreamgirls is the only one looking to be a lock for a best film nomination so far.
