Movielink licenses download-to-burn DVD technology
Reuters is reporting that online movie download service Movielink is going to license technology allowing us consumers to download then burn that movie onto a DVD. We’re certain the quality will be craptastic ™ with no bonus features.
But the download-to-burn service will not be available until the company obtains a license for DVD encrypting technology later this year.
“We are hopeful this gets into the market in a big way in the next six months or so,” Jim Ramo, MovieLink chief executive said on Monday.
Only a portion of Movielink’s 1,500-title library will be available for download-to-burn until Movielink clears those rights with its studio investors, Ramo said.
Still, the move marks a major advancement for Hollywood because until now, the major movie studios have been very concerned that consumers might download and copy DVDs, thus increasing piracy of the studio content.
Movielink is the first major download service to offer download-to-burn DVD for use in personal computers, and many consumers have been waiting until those DVDs could also be played on standard DVD players linked to television sets.
