The Toronto Star takes an early look at Blu-Ray. Even though they want to get jiggy with the new format, the format war ™ with HD-DVD makes them nervous.

“It’s far too early to pick a winner. Most pundits call it a fairly even race out of the gate.
HD DVD machines had a slight head start on Blu-ray hitting the market. And the HD DVD machines are certainly cheaper so far.

But Blu-ray technology is the choice of more Hollywood studios including Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Disney and Lion’s Gate Films. That could play a major role in determining which technology attracts the largest library of movie titles — the lifeblood of any home entertainment system.

Consider the possibility, for example, of only being able to buy a high definition copy of Spiderman 3 in Blu-ray format. If you’ve got an HD DVD machine at home, you’re stuck buying a standard definition version of the blockbuster — hardly the point of owning a high definition player. Your snobby new eyeballs will barely be able to sit through it.”
