Mike Myers Over The Moon For New Musical Biopic

July 18, 2008

From MTV:

Mike Myers’ long-in-development film on legendary Who drummer Keith Moon is finally nearing the starting gate, the comic told MTV News, excited to step into the shoes of the man he called the best drummer of all time.

“Keith Moon redefined drumming. I mean, there was drumming before him, and then drumming after him,” Myers said of Moon. “His life is just so colorful and fascinating.”

And remarkably, unmistakably depressing, Myers added, calling the script “so sad.”

Even Canadians Hate Mike Myers

June 24, 2008

Like other homegrown actors who spend the majority of their time outside of Canada — that means you, Jim Carrey — comedian Mike Myers is no longer ours to keep.

Allow us to explain why that’s great news in our books.

So I Married an Axe Murderer is the one Myers movie fans and non-fans can agree on. It’s funny and fresh, if not borderline legendary for its quotability. (”I believe I ordered the large cappuccino,” Myers quips in one scene, after being served a coffee that would dwarf a Buick.)

The Scarborough native’s funniest film turns 15 years old this summer, which is disconcerting. In the decade-and-a-half since its release, Myers — one of the greats in Saturday Night Live history — has become one of the highest-paid actors of his time.

Despite all his success, Myers has not progressed. In fact, he has regressed: The comic has dumbed down his art into a shtick that relies primarily on poop jokes, cultural stereotypes and Scottish accents. His newest film, The Love Guru, is merely an extension of that formula, but with Bollywood stereotypes in place of haggis riffs.

Deepak Chopra Defends Mike Myers’ ‘Love Guru’

June 3, 2008

Best-selling author and spiritual teacher Deepak Chopra has come out in defense of the upcoming Mike Myers movie The Love Guru, posting an essay online in response to members of the Hindu community who have said the comedy is offensive and mocks their faith. Myers stars as an aspiring self-help guru that is something of a Chopra wanna-be. Protesters have said the movie seems to be lampooning Hinduism and Hindus and uses their sacred terms frivolously. Chopra’s essay points out that the complaints are based only on the movie’s 2 1/2-minute trailer. ”The premature outcry against the movie is itself religious propaganda,” Chopra wrote. ”As viewers will find out when the movie is released this summer, no one is more thoroughly skewered in it than I am — you could even say that I am made to seem preposterous.”

Chopra, who makes a cameo in the movie, says he has been friends with Myers for years and that the actor’s character in the movie is based partly on him. Myers ”has the most profound understanding of Eastern wisdom, traditions and spirituality,” Chopra said. ”In the end, the movie is about self-esteem and love. It is about, in fact, love being the ultimate truth. He goes about it in a very silly, humorous way, but that’s his style.” The Love Guru releases on June 20.
