Q. Are you involved at all in the Christian Bale production of Terminator 4?

It could be a big steaming pile or it could be brilliant. Sam Worthington is in the Avatar and the new Terminator and he likes the script, but I never saw it. There was no blessing involved.

Q. Well, you certainly blessed the career of Leonardo DiCaprio. What did you see in him?

I wasn’t that impressed when I first met him, a good-looking kid, but he didn’t strike me as having that internal strength I needed the character to have. Remember, when I cast Leo, he wasn’t a leading man movie star. He was doing quirky character parts — a smack addict in Basketball Diaries, a mentally challenged kid in Gilbert Grape. I looked past that at what his potential might be, and, of course, when Leo auditioned with Kate, he became the guy before my eyes…and then he refused to do it again! He refused to be put on tape! Well, I went to the studio and said, ‘this is the guy, absolutely.’ They said based on Gilbert Grape? I said, ‘just pay him, he’s the guy.’ And he was.
